Most people know it as 'Sawing a Woman in Half', others may refer to it as 'Dividing a Girl in Two' and we've heard the term 'Cutting a Lady in Half' but whatever they may wish to call it or however it is performed and wherever you may see it, it surely must be the most famous illusion of all time. It has baffled people for decades. It has become the 'magician's nightmare' that of being asked if the magician can cut somebody's wife (or husband) in two! But it must be known and recognised that this is not a man on woman illusion, men have been divided in two too and in many ways as well.

Here, at www.sawinginhalf.com we are going to see some of the various versions used by several famous magicians and illusionists worldwide. We know that there are many more versions out there and we are considering adding these as we discover them and when we have the time. If you would like to see a version not listed here, then send us a message and we'll consider your suggestion.

The Selbit Version

It is said that this is the first version of the illusion to have been performed in public, however there are many beliefs that previous versions may have been invented pre this version.

PT Selbit was a British magician. He performed his version for the first time in public in January 1921 at the Finsbury Park Empire theatre in London. He had already performed the illusion in December 1920 before a select audience of promoters and theatrical agents at the St. George's Hall, London, in order to try and obtain bookings for his new act. Unfortunately there is no video of PT Selbit performing this illusion, however Paul Daniels performed this illusion during one of his TV shows.

The Alan Wakeling Version

Alan Wakeling. In many ways, This version is an improvement on the original Selbit Sawing by magician Alan Wakeling. Apart from the boxes being thinner,, a number of other features ensure that it is impossible for the assistant to move in any section of the box before, during or after their separation. This version is most probably the best version ever and is still used by the most famous and popular magicians and illusionists all over the world. Here we see Jinger and Kalin performing this illusion for us.

Modern Thin Sawing Version

As the years progressed, the illusion begun becoming thinner in appearance and many other features were added to create an even impossible illusion for the audience. This version is used by several magicians all over the world. The head and feet of the assistant can be seen at all times making this absolutely an entertaining and amazing illusion to watch..Here we see Doug Henning performing this double version on the Carson show.
